How to study
The FSI Method, Modernised
People who want to learn a language, and do not know how, usually download a course and stall. The Foreign Service Institute method is a procedure: hear a short dialogue, repeat it until it is automatic, then change one piece at a time. Vento keeps that procedure and adds a daily path, plus pronunciation feedback in your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari).
What the method is
The courses are audio-lingual. You memorise a dialogue, then you drill it: repetition, substitution (swap one word), and transformation (change the sentence). You are supposed to speak, not to translate in your head. That is the whole trick. It is older than the apps that gamify the same idea.
Does it work?
The original students were diplomats in class most of the day. That is not your week. Readers who try the courses alone often say the drills build a speaking habit and that the books feel dated and strict. Both can be true. The method does not replace hearing real conversations. It does give you a first thing to do tomorrow morning.
How to use an FSI course
- Pick one language and open unit 1. Do not preview the whole book.
- Learn the sounds in that unit before you collect vocabulary.
- Play the dialogue. Speak each line. If you cannot say it, you are not done.
- Do the repetition drill, then the substitution drill. Ten to twenty minutes is enough.
- Shadow one line: speak with the audio, slightly behind it.
- The next day, say yesterday’s dialogue once before the new unit.
Courses live on the FSI courses page. If you want a language with almost no competing free course, start with Hijazi Arabic.
Shadowing, review, and pronunciation
Shadowing is the repetition drill without a pause. Spaced review is how you stop unit 1 from disappearing when you reach unit 4. Pronunciation feedback runs in your browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari). On Chrome it can send audio to the browser's speech service, so it is not on-device. A downloaded lesson's text and audio still play without a connection. None of these replace the dialogue. They keep you inside it.
Who should skip this
If you want a two-minute game, this will feel strict. If you want a conversation partner, a drill book will not be that. If you already speak the language and want news or novels, start there instead.
Questions
Does the FSI method work?
It trained diplomats who studied full time, with a teacher and a class. Self-learners on forums often find the drills effective and dry. It works best if you also hear the language outside the book. It will not, by itself, make you fluent on a commute.
How do I use an FSI language course?
One unit at a time. Listen to the dialogue, repeat every line aloud, do the substitution drills, then review that unit before you start the next. Do not collect PDFs.
What is shadowing?
Play a line and speak with it, a fraction of a second behind the voice, matching rhythm. It is a way to do the same repetition the course already asks for.
Is spaced repetition enough on its own?
No. A flashcard tells you that you remember a gloss. The FSI drill asks you to say the sentence. Use review to bring a unit back, then say it again.
